The children at AFESIP’s Somaly House Center in Kompong Cham province have ambitious dreams for their future. They want to become lawyers, doctors, center managers, journalists, and teachers. Part of our commitment to our beneficiaries is to ensure that they are given the opportunity to attain these goals while growing and maturing in a safe and secure environment.
All residents at Somaly House are sent to public school at the age of six. The primary and secondary schools are within walking distance from the center and enrollment is free for all children. As part of AFESIP’s duty and obligation as the residents’ guardians, AFESIP raises funds to support the children’s needs such as food, clothes, school uniforms, material, bags, slippers, sportswear, and various other necessities. Currently, there are 75 children attending public schools; 5 children attending maternity school, 35 at primary school, 19 at lower secondary school, 13 at upper secondary school and 1 at university level at Faculty of Law and Economy.
Somaly House center is also responsible for the children’s health and wellbeing—the center provides a medical room with salaried medical staff at their disposal and a psychology room with a psychologist on staff. For recreation and to promote reading and learning, the center offers an English/computer room where they can access the internet and a library for all residents and local village children to read. Somaly House also provides the young residents with basic training skills in sewing and weaving.
